We make candy the slow way, a few pounds at a time.

The factory is one long room on Butler Street. Copper kettles along one wall, a marble cooling table in the middle, a taffy hook bolted to a post that has been there longer than any of us. Most batches are twenty to thirty pounds. That is small enough to watch the thermometer instead of a screen.

We sell almost nothing at retail. Our candy ends up in gift shops along the lake, in corner grocers, on wedding favor tables and in welcome bags at conferences downtown. Buyers get a price per pound, a sample box and a real person on the phone.

If you want candy with your own name on the wrapper, we do that too. Private-label runs start at 50 pounds, and the wax paper twist wrappers are printed with your artwork.

We tried three suppliers before these folks. Theirs is the only taffy that still pulls soft after two weeks on the shelf, and when I call, somebody who actually makes it picks up.

Four hundred bags of taffy with our logo on the twist, delivered to the hotel loading dock the day before the conference. Nobody had to chase anything.

Most first orders take about three weeks from the first email to candy on your shelf. Here is what happens in between.

01

Price sheet. Tell us what you sell and roughly how much. We reply with per-pound pricing and the current flavor list, usually within two business days.

02

Sample box. Retailers get a two-pound sample box. You pay only shipping, and we credit it on your first order.

03

Wrapper proof. For private label we send a digital proof of your wrapper. Changes are free until you sign off.

04

Cooking and packing. Your candy is made for your order, not pulled from a warehouse. Taffy is wrapped and cased the same day it is cut.

05

Pickup or freight. Pick up on Butler Street, or we ship ground freight anywhere in the continental US.

My customers ask for the peppermint hard candy by name now. I reorder every six weeks and it has never once shown up broken.

The people at the kettles

Two names you will hear when you call.

Dana Kowalczyk

Dana Kowalczyk

Head candy maker

Dana learned to read a sugar thermometer from her grandmother and still trusts the cold water test more than the digital one. She decides when a batch is done, and she is the reason the taffy recipe has not changed.

Questions buyers ask first

How long does the candy keep?

Taffy and hard candy stay good for about nine months in a cool, dry place. Fudge keeps six weeks sealed, chocolate pretzels about four months. Every case is marked with a best-by date.

What about allergens?

Everything is made on shared equipment that also handles milk, soy, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts. We can not offer a nut-free guarantee, and we would rather tell you that up front.

Can you make a custom flavor?

For private-label orders of 100 lb or more, yes, if the flavoring is food-grade and holds up in a hot kettle. We make a test batch first and send it to you before the full run.

Do you ship outside the continental US?

Not at the moment. Summer shipments to hot states go with cold packs and a surcharge, or we hold them until the weather turns.
